There are a lot of really good things about MorningPep Xylitol. First, it’s natural. It is NOT a chemical sugar substitute. It’s made from real birch and has absolutely no aftertaste. It tastes like sugar, measures the same as sugar, and yet, it supports dental health (It actually improves it by fighting plaque!!). It has a low glycemic index so it’s safe for diabetics. MorningPep Xylitol is also Kosher Certified and completely GMO and Allergen Free!

So what’s the bad news? It’s not calorie free. MorningPep Xylitol has 9.60 calories per teaspoon. The granules are a little bigger than regular sugar, and if you put a pinch in your mouth, you’ll find out that it doesn’t dissolve quite as quickly as sugar. I have to admit the first thing I thought was, “This would be fantastic on top of sugar cookies!”

I made this Sparkling Grapefruit Pie and you can’t even tell I used MorningPep Xylitol or Sugar Free Jello! The recipe called for regular Jello and regular sugar, but I couldn’t resist trying to make it a little less fattening. With 60% less calories than sugar, and 75% less carbohydrates, it’s so much healthier than sugar!

Sparkling Grapefruit Pie made with MorningPep Xylitol

 Ok, it’s not beautiful, but it means I can have sweet things that are still healthy – and keep losing the weight I feel I need to lose. I love this pie because I can eat it for breakfast without feeling guilty! Here’s the recipe –

Sparkling Grapefruit Pie

9 inch pie crust baked (or a graham cracker crust)

4 pink grapefruit

1/2 cup MorningPep Xylitol (or white sugar)

1 Tablespoon Cornstarch

3/4 Cup Grapefruit juice (this will drain from your grapefruit)

1 (3 oz) package lemon or strawberry gelatin mix (I used Sugar Free!)

  1. Peel grapefruit removing all pith and skin from sections. Cut into bite size pieces. Drain in a strainer for  about 3 hours to collect juice.
  2. Combine sugar (or MorningPep Xylitol), cornstarch and collected juice in a small saucepan. If collected juice doesn’t equal 3/4 cup, just add enough water to make it right. Bring to a boil, and stir in gelatin. Cool slightly.
  3. Spread grapefruit in pie shell, and pour gelatin mixture over grapefruit. Chill until gelatin sets.

You can use Strawberry flavored gelatin mix instead. It’s a really refreshing pie for those hot summer days! My boys are not fond of strawberry, so I chose the Lemon instead. They couldn’t even tell that it was made with Sugar Free Gelatin and MorningPep Xylitol. Now I feel like I’m making progress!
