Where The Heck Have You Been?!

Surgery or Not?

First I need to apologize to everyone. I’ve been extremely absent. Now that I can actually sit in a chair for an extended period of time, I am back to tell you why!

I have been diagnosed with sciatica. It is a very painful condition that must be ‘managed’. Yeah, there really isn’t anything that can be done for it, outside of surgery. Surgery isn’t usually done, unless it is a severe case. See, sciatica is a pinched nerve in your back. It radiates pain (unmerciful, unrelenting, searing pain) down the leg. The way they ‘manage’ it is to make you walk. Yes, walk! The more you walk, the less the pain becomes. I can tell you this is true, because I’ve been dealing with this condition since March.

Me with my boys at SeaWorld San Antonio

The first time this ever hit me I did what I always do – research. I read everything I could find and everything said walk, so I did. I’d been trying to walk more anyway, to lose some weight. That is why I bought the Garmin VivoFit, after all! Walking worked, until a new wave decided to hit me, harder than the first. I walked more and it started to subside yet again. I mean, I walked all over SeaWorld for two days! I was a little slow, and had a little ‘hitch in my giddy-up’, but I didn’t hurt as much. Then the Mother Wave hit me. The pain was so bad, I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t even sit upright, normal, in a normal chair! I had to sit half reclined (full reclined was SO painful!), and still I hurt so bad…

That's exactly how I felt!

Hubby took me to the hospital, where they put me on a nerve block and a muscle relaxer, and gave me an appointment with a doctor. The doctor upped the nerve block, because I was a crying mess by the time I made it into the examining room. She changed the muscle relaxer and gave me a steroid to top it all off. Oh, and an order for an MRI. The meds she gave me work really well. The steroid was only for 5 days, but I can sit in a chair and have dinner with my family now. I can walk too. At the end of the day, I am in some pain from what I do all day (Yes, I probably over-do it!), but I can function. You don’t understand how happy I was that I could do laundry, and load the dishwasher myself!

I loaded my dishwasher!

I am currently waiting for results from the MRI. Just waiting to hear if they think it needs surgery. I’ve heard from some who are in this same situation already (join the Facebook conversation here). My prayers are with anyone who is in this – or any – kind of pain.

Have you ever had sciatica? Come share your story!

    • Thank you so much Georgette! I am still waiting for the results of the MRI. I really hope it can be resolved quickly. In the meantime, I’m working on getting the blog numbers back up. I’m working on a few giveaways too,so tell all your friends!

  2. I’m finally getting through all of my emails after being gone all of July. Oh dear Kay! I’m sorry you were in so much pain! I know it’s been almost a month, but I hope you’re improving! I’ll be praying that the pain has subsided and you can feel more at ease! <3
