Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles

Ok, I’ll admit that when I accepted this book for review, I was a little apprehensive. I’m very leary of parenting manuals that try to tell parents how to raise their children. I’ve read so many, and the truth is, they were all right. See, different things work differently, because all children are different. I know that at first that doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, but if you’ll think about it, you’ll agree. What works for some, won’t work for others, or whatever concept it is will work, if tweaked just the tiniest bit. So, I approached Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family by Paul David Tripp, with the same attitude. I figured, it would be correct to an extent, but that things might need to be tweaked to work for everyone.

Not Just Another ‘How To’ Parenting Manual

My first mistake was thinking this was just another parenting manual. This is a book about parenting, and as such approaches the change of the family by changing our attitudes, not our childrens’. Parents read parenting manuals looking for rules. We want a checklist that will be the secret to raising perfect children. Mr. Tripp’s view of parenting uses the Gospels, shows us that with God’s grace, and love, we can raise happy, grounded children. It helps us see and understand the big picture, and to parent with vision, purpose, and joy.

Mr. Tripp’s Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles covers it all just like God’s grace covers us every day. I love that he backs every principle up with scripture from the Gospels. I only wish that Mr. Tripp’s book had been written and published sooner, so I could have used these principles to raise my own children. I will be sharing this parenting book with all my children though. This book is more about how we as parents can be closer to God in raising our children, and in turn bring them to Him as well, than it is a parenting manual.
